The approach of the Public Cloud is in contrast to the Private Cloud. In Public Cloud all resources are distributed among service users with the aim of intensive and continuous innovation. Cloud Providers can provide custom services for users with configurable capacities per enterprise. Configuration can also be done in stages so that the scaling up cost is proportional and fit to the company’s cash flow capabilities. This cost flexibility is a much sought after and valued advantage in Cloud implementations.
Utilizing the Public Cloud is analogous to using public transportation buses where several other passengers ride with us in one vehicle. Just like traveling by bus, we only need to pay for the routes that we choose. Therefore, we can turn off unneeded resources and save money. This Public Cloud payment system is pay-as-you-use (OPEX). Similar to public transportation, users of the Public Cloud must be willing to share resources and be aware that this other user also has the right to use this Cloud facility (low degree of ownership, resource sharing).
There are several simple examples of Public Clouds that are familiar to our ears. Various Public Cloud providers provide platform services for free with limited storage capacity. One example is Google Drive and Dropbox. This strategy is to introduce their service to the public. If the user requires a larger storage capacity, the user can subscribe to a larger storage space package provided by the provider. This free storage access usually only consists of a link with a userID-password combination, therefore it is not suitable for company usage because the security compliance aspect is not met.
Like enterprise devices in general, before using the Enterprise Public Cloud, it is better to do a trial on the business processes that are already running. Although it doesn’t cost much, the trial & error process in migrating to the Public Cloud will take a lot of time and effort. This is caused by the process of translating the language or terms into the language used by the Cloud. If this process takes too long, the cost aspect will also be affected.
There are two alternatives that companies can choose regarding this Public Cloud trial. The first alternative, the company’s IT team can create an account, configure, understand the terms and conditions and the risk of being billed (usually a credit card entry is required) for Enterprise Public Cloud independently.
Another alternative is to work with a trusted partner such as ACS Group who will assist your company transition process to this Enterprise Public Cloud. ACS Group provides free coupons for trial purposes and consulting services regarding the needs and specifications required by the company.
Enterprises need to carefully consider whether they will partially or completely migrate data to a Cloud environment. The importance of implementing a Public Cloud can be illustrated by the two scenarios below.
Imagine if your company is preparing an annual special event. All ticket sales for this event are done through a website hosted on your server. On D-1, your company realized that the server specifications were inadequate to accommodate the expected traffic and could not accommodate data from users. If this problem is not addressed, the credibility of your company’s website will be at stake. Especially if this event is the backbone and benchmark of your company’s annual sales.
To procure additional servers, you only have one option. The company will be forced to buy a over-spec, expensive, and will not be used effectively after the event is over server. The analogy is like buying a laptop that can run the latest game applications but is only used for office applications such as Ms.Word, Ms.Excel without pivot, and Ms.PowerPoint without animation.
In the second scenario, imagine your company is doing total WFH (work from home). A sudden electrical problem occurs in your office which causes an indefinite power outage throughout the building, including the server room. Employees cannot access data and other important applications which pose an obstacle to work progress. Public Cloud serves to prevent detrimental events to the company such as the example above.
The Cloud is the future, and that future is starting now. Cloud utilization as an enterprise solution is increasingly prevalent in everyday use. Slowly but surely, Cloud is starting to shift traditional data storage-on premise. Files, OS databases, and mission-critical business application operations will be stored securely in the Cloud. The flexibility and availability offered by the Cloud that does not depend on special and continuous supervision make Cloud computing solutions the right choice for companies that do not want to be hampered in their development. With increasing competition accompanied by standardization of compliance carried out by each Cloud provider, the benefits and solutions of the Cloud are increasingly actual for today’s needs.
